“A Present to Young Housewives” by Elena Molokhovets.

In the month of August on collecting or buying a large amount of village apples at a low price one can lay in a store of them for the winter. The best of all would be to spread summer grade apples on straw-covered clean and dry cellar racks with a space between each other and wipe them with a dry towel more often. The apples supposed to be stored shall be taken down from a tree, not thrown off. The apples are stored in buckets or pails with close lids. They shall be put in the basement or the cellar so that not to get frozen. The apples to be stored until the spring shall be placed in pits as potatoes and covered with thick blanket of dried leaves underlain with the planking.
